AIRFRAME
The Chinook Plus 2, in its SUV design, has unique features that are exclusive only to itself. Through this Feature Section, you will be able to realize its uniqueness and the reason the Chinook Plus 2 features are strong, rugged with visibility surpassed by on one else in its Class.

The Roomy Cabin – Our SUV like Chinook Plus 2 has cabin room that you wouldn’t expect. Designed for the Big and Tall pilot, the front cabin area has afforded even pilots as tall as 6’7” and over 275 lbs, the comfort of a roomy and highly visible cabin. With the lower lexan panel option, the cabin gives you a helicopter effect with visibility like no other model in its class. Pilot and passenger are secured with the 4 point seat belt harness and ready to enjoy the sights from the enclosed cabin with easy to remove Lexan doors. 

 

 

The Fuselage – The fuselage, undercarriage (4130 Chromaly Steel), tail and cabin assembly are built as a unit around our 4” diameter 6061-T6 aluminum tube. This tube acts as a lower spine. The body of the aircraft is an elongated pentagonal cross section which achieves a good compromise between triangularized strength and the round streamlined shape. All major load bearing members terminate in a strong cluster joint to transfer undercarriage, seat, wing and fuselage. 

Engine Mount - The engine mount is considered standard equipment on all our Chinook Airframes. The Dyno-Focal mount was engineered for our use to create a mount that absorbs vibration better then any other mount. This provides a very noticeable difference in smoothness unlike other brands that use flat mounts. The 503 and 582 have an inverted mount while the HKS and 912 have an upright mount. Each mount has been designed to allow the engine to be tucked behind the airframe with plenty of prop clearance for a good size diameter prop and for the best aerodynamics.

Lexan Enclosed Cabin with Easy to Remove Doors – The Chinook Plus 2 comes standard with an enclosed cabin with easy to remove doors. Never has it been easier to switch from the enclosed cabin to an open cockpit feeling with doors off. The standard Lexan is the lightweight 1/16” Clear lexan. Customers can choose to upgrade to the Bronze lexan which is in the small light weight configuration. The Chinook essentially has 3 doors, two front doors and one rear left door which is how the original Chinooks were built. Some customers also want the one window to convert to a door and we can provide a kit to do so, you just have to let us know. With the quick clip off hinge system, the doors are quick and easy to remove making the Chinook a true year round aircraft.

Instruments – Each engine application requires different engine readings. In your complete Chinook Plus 2 package, we have provided you with the necessary engine instruments that you will need to successfully monitor your EGT’s, CHT’s, RPM and in some instances instruments to monitor Cooling, Oil temperatures, Oil levels etc. We have taken the guess work out of what instruments are necessary for each engine application by having a complete package provided for you. Flight instruments are also provided with your package and in your two stroke package we include the Altimeter (0-20,000) and Airspeed (0-100 mph) while with your 4 stroke package we also include the VSI which is an available as an option for the 503 and 582 packages. Our Engine instruments are a combination of Westach and VDO which are companies world renown for their expertise in this field. Our flight instruments are made by a very reputable company in China. As an additional option, customers can upgrade to the Digital EIS unit which can be completely Digital or a combination of EIS with analog instrumentation.

GSC Propellers – Our propeller of choice is the 3 blade ground adjustable GSC propeller with the leading edge protection. GSC is one of the longest standing prop manufacturers in our industry and the blade profile provided by the hard Maplewood ground adjustable blades have given our customers one of the best takeoff and thrust that we have ever tested. The blades can be replaced if necessary and are great for both land and water application. A simple protractor is provided with each prop to adjust your pitch. GSC is a company we count on for superior craftsmanship and great customer support.

Brake Package – Our brake package consists of either the Mechanical brakes or the Hegar Heavy duty 6” Disc Hydraulic brakes. With our 2 stroke packages and our HKS package, we provide the standard Mechanical brakes. The standard brakes for our 912 Chinooks is the Hegar Hydraulic brakes. With both packages, we provide our customers with the hand lever brake actuator that is mounted on the control stick and all our complete kit packages come with the robust Tundra tires with 6” rims. Customers may choose to upgrade to the Hydraulic brakes if they wish.

Bungee System – The Chinook Plus 2 comes with a triangulated gear with simple but effective Bungee suspension with the use of the Beefy Tundra tires making for a cushioned and easy landing. 

 

 

Wing Design – The Chinook Plus 2 wing is a strong two spar unit with cross strut bracing which is produced in a jig at our factory. It is supported by streamlined lift and jury struts to keep overall height and weight to a minimum. To retain construction simplicity, we supply the preformed wing with the ease of inserting our own designed ribs and rib ends that are simply secured to the main spar. The aileron system is a full span aileron with a built in mechanical flaperon mechanism. Flaperons control the ailerons by raising or lowering simultaneously, thus allowing trim adjustment, lower stall speed for shorter lading rolls and for better take off float performance. The Ceconite 1.7 ounce fabric is adhered to the wing and aileron frames and then painted. This conventional like system along with the Endura paint product, gives you an aerodynamic wing that performs with excellence. As quoted by Dan Johnson, “One surprising performance characteristic of the Chinook is its low sink rate. This wing design has impressed me before, and its descent rate near 350 fpm beats virtually every other ultralight two seater I've flown”.

 

 

 

Tail Section – We supply ready made elevator and stabilizers which again are pre-jigged at our factory, so once the fabric work is done, it is just a matter of assembling it to the main airframe.

 

 

The Spring Loaded Tail Wheel System – Introduced in 2000, the spring loaded tail wheel has made our docile tail dragger even more docile. The spring system assures a more effective steering action making crosswind landings a breeze. The rugged tail wheel is just another standard feature of an already rugged tail dragger airplane.

 

 

 

Dual Strut Fuel Tanks – 4.5 US gallons per side, the strut fuel tanks are mounted on each side of the aircraft right on the struts. These unique “football” shaped tanks are easy to access for filling and as easy to always check your fuel levels. A simple but effective way to keep fuel away from the main cabin area.

Instrument Panel – The standard airframe comes with two instrument panels. The front panel is a pre-molded black material that encloses the panel so it conceals wires and the back end of the instruments for a nice clean application. The non drilled panel allows for the necessary flight and engine instruments to be installed and displayed for easy readings. The smaller rear panel is a pre-drilled aluminum panel that does allow the installation of an airspeed and altimeter if the builder chooses.

Paint Product and Color Choice – Endura Mfg has been our paint product choice since the inception of the Chinook Plus 2. The Topcoat provides an ideal performance aliphatic polyurethane coating with a high gloss finish. The product already contains the UV protection so you have no additives or extra coats to apply for the UV protection and we order all the Endura products with the Flex Coat agent needed for fabric application. Color choices are infinite but we do provide you with a basic color chart to help you make your selection. You can also send us a color sample of your choice and Endura will match it up for you or you can provide us a paint color code so you can customize the color of your Chinook Plus 2. The paint color really personalizes your kit and we have seen some fabulous and creative color combinations. This part of your kit is really your time to be creative!!!


Engine Selection – Please refer to our ENGINE CHOICE section for all the details on the power plants we have available for our Chinook Plus 2. When a customer makes an engine choice, part of the complete package will include the engine mount, the muffler attach kit, the throttle cables, the air filter, fuel filter and any other engine accessory that is necessary for the engine so that it can be successfully mounted on the Chinook airframe. No one else provides as complete a package as we do!!!
