14. How many bolts do I use to mount the exhaust manifold to the engine?
15. How do the parts from the “582 Rotax Flywheel Cover” get attached?
16. Where and how does the radiator mount?

1.  Where does the strobe get mounted?
Most people have mounted the strobe in the middle of the wing area over the root tube. We normally install the12 volt single strobe. - back to top

2. Will the HKS carb heat element work on the 912?
The HKS carb heat element will work on the 912 due to them both having the same type carb. The other choice is liquid which I think Leading Edge Air Foils sell from a supplier in England. Some use carb heat some do not. http://www.ulparts.com/infocarbheat.aspx - back to top

3. Does the 503 engine come with carb heat? Is it an issue with dual carbs or not really a concern?
The 503 does not come with carb heat. It may be available through Rotax. Carb icing should not be a problem unless it is very cold or a high dew point (weather wise). What we like to do and what my instructors taught me is to run the engine up and get it warm then shut it down and cover the engine with a canvas tarp. Do all your other stuff before you go flying; fill with gas, do walk around, get your maps, set up your fishing pole etc. This allows the heat from the engine to get every thing like the carbs, gear box etc. warm and you have less of a problem with things. - back to top

4. How does the CHT and EGT get hooked up without lead extensions?
Cut the short extension in half. Go to Radio Shack and/or a similar store and buy the clear speaker wire. You can also hook up the EGT, CHT and Tachometer at the panel to the 12 pair cable by cutting the leads that come out of the gauges in half. - back to top

5. What route do you typically use for these cables and what length extensions do you use if they are needed?
You have to use some sort of extension because the wire that they supply is only about 48". -back to top

6. How do I run the wires under the cabin carpet?
We wait until after the engine is broken in (1 hour run-up before tying up all the wiring) then we put them in a 1" plastic loom and hide all the wiring on the RH side of the aircraft. There is nothing worse than having a wire not hooked up correctly and then having to tear into your nice wire harness. - back to top

7. Is the solenoid the same thing as a starter relay?
Yes. - back to top

8. How do you recommend securing the battery box under the right side of the front seat?
With rivets to the two 3-4 floor cross tubes.- back to top

9. Do I need to flip the intake manifolds?
No. The carburetors are attached to the intake manifold and on the new engines this comes out straight. Look on page 6-4 #3 in the Rotax Installation Manual. - back to top

10.  What bolt is used to bleed air and what fitting does it get exchanged with?
The bolt is on the water pump (hose #14 on page 11-4) and the fitting is on the cylinder head (hose #14 on page 11-3). The fitting goes on the water pump and the bolt goes on the cylinder head. Refer to pages 11-3 and 11-4 in the Rotax Installation Manual. - back to top

11. Where does the black hose from the oil tank attach to the engine?
This hose goes to your oil injection. Look in your Rotax installation manual on page 12-1 and 12. - back to top

12. How do I replace the 2 existing pieces of tube that run from the small plastic bottle below the carb (in the inverted installation) to the engine?
Refer to the installation manual for the rotary valve on page 13-2 and the instruction sheet included with your kit for changing over for inverted use. Also, look at page 13-2. Hose #4 is on the bottom of the engine, which is now the top for an inverted engine. Turn this fitting sideways to get the hose on and miss the motor mount. Refer to the attached pictures to see how to remove the plate to get to the other fitting for Hose #5. See the attached pictures. - back to top

13. How do I attach the 4th mounting bolt to the 10-75U bracket after I have the engine mounted?
Put the bolt in from bottom to top. Place the penny washer onto the bolt then put the one half of the rubber mount on the bolt. From the bottom of the 10-75U put the bolt in and then slide the other part of the rubber onto the bolt and into the 10-75U. See the attached pictures. - back to top

14. How many bolts do I use to mount the exhaust manifold to the engine?
Bolts for the manifold come with the Rotax accessories. They are hex head and you can only get three in because of manifold curve (three on each cylinder). See attached picture. - -back to top

15. How do the parts from the “582 Rotax Flywheel Cover” get attached?
Follow the directions that are included in your construction manual which will also contain the picture. See the attached picture. -

16. Where and how does the radiator mount?
See the attached pictures. - back to top

17. Which wires do I use as the second set of white and black wires with the EGT?
Use the red and green wires as a second set of white and black wires with the EGT.- back to top

18. How does the rest of the exhaust system hook up after the muffler is installed and mounted?  See the attached pictures. - back to top

19. What is the extra hose coming off the top of my radiator?
That is the #14 hose coming off the top. Refer to Rotax Installation Manual, page 11-4 - back to top

20. What can I do when the prop turns, but doesn’t fire?
Try putting the water temp lead on the IGN terminal. Otherwise you will not have power to your water temp until the key is turned to the acc position. However this should not affect the starting of the engine. back to top

The engine may be flooded. Follow these instructions to check for engine flooding and for spark. Remove the spark plugs and see if they are wet or full of gas. If they are, blow them dry with some compressed air or dry them with a lighter or propane torch. BE CAREFUL REMEMBER YOU ARE WORKING AROUND A HIGH GAS FILLED AREA.

Next, ground the spark plugs to the engine case (make sure they are touching something metal). Have someone turn the engine over while you look at the spark plugs to see if you are getting spark. WATCH THE PROP! This will also clean out all of the gas that may have collected in the cylinders. If you get no spark, change the toggle position and try again. This will also tell you what way the toggles are on. Make sure that you battery is well charged so that when the plugs are back in the engine is turning over good to create a good spark.

Try to start the engine with about a quarter throttle to give it more air. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH TO BE CAREFUL AT THIS POINT BECAUSE IT MAY START AND SURPRISE YOU. You have been working on this with no results so you may not expect it to fire up so be ready to shut the engine down and block the tires so the plane does not go anywhere. -

21. How do I interpret the diagram for the “combination” starter/solenoid when I have a separate starter (on the e-drive) and a solenoid mounted near the battery?
Every electrical system requires a starter and a starter solenoid. Some systems have the solenoid on the starter, some have the starter solenoid remote. The starter needs to know when to start and this is the reason for the starter solenoid. It is just a switching device to engage the starter. - back to top

22. What was the schematic I have (the one that shows one toggle switch, along with the EGT, CHT and water temp gauge) to be used for?
That schematic provides two examples of the how the system can be wired. The system can be wired many ways and with many different components. One uses two toggle switches and the other uses the mag on/off starter switch combination. - back to top

23. Do the two unused poles on each toggle switch just get left open?
In the construction manual there are two wiring schematics. The first one is with a dual mag ignition switch with RH and LH mag on the switch. The second one is just a normal ignition switch, which you have to wire the RH and LH mags to the two supplied toggle switches and are not wired to the ignition switch. - back to top

24. What do I do with the disc that came in a bag labeled "E Drive parts”?
Mount the prop to the disk on the engine. Do not use the one that came in the bag as this is for a prop that has a wood hub. Make sure that you screw in the sheer pins that come with your prop into the disc before you put the prop on

Changes needed to be made on 582 for Inverted Installation:
There is a bolt that is on the side of the case, it is used to bleed the air out of the water pump. Exchange this bolt with a fitting that is on the cylinder head.

On the rotary valve oil lines, you have to place a longer hose on the return line to allow the tank to be higher than the crankcase. You may also have to flip the intake manifolds so that the carbs will be straight but look at this before you do to make sure.

The radiator may also be affected as when we order the engine for the Chinook Plus 2 it is always inverted and Rotax supplies us with the correct rad and the side mount exhaust needed for proper installation.

25. Could I drill extra holes and add more rivets though the elevator horn to secure it into the elevator?
The fewer holes in the elevator the better. If you feel that you need to secure the horn better just use one 3/16 rivet. Make sure that the bolt is tight, but do not over tighten to oblong the tube and make the elevator stiff. - back to top

26. Can I use regular 10mm nylon locking nuts and washers instead of the “aviation grade” with the Rotax?
Yes - back to top

27. How do I work around the rotary valve oil hose so I can mount the 10-75U plates to the engine block?
The fitting can either be turned so the hose will run under the plate or a hole can be drilled through the plate to route the line. Make sure that the hole is bigger so the line will not get cut. You can also silicone the hose so that it will not rub.- back to top

28. Where are the 2 water-tight conductors used for on the HKS?
Refer to your HKS manual, Page 16. It is stated what these are and what they are used for. You will note some connectors on your CDI packs and you need to connect these and these are used for that purpose. - back to top
